New releases

Fork Brewing Galactic Gose dry hopped sour wheat (4.5%) - Aroma: Big notes of ripe pineapple, papaya and guava with a hint of pink grapefruit and a subtle malt-cracker aromatic. Flavour: Big tartness grips the entire palate, with the salty sensation giving a bust of perceived sweetness to balance the lactic acid sourness. Tropical fruit notes abound with a tangy, almost cider-esque finish and mineral smoothness. Hops:  Australian Galaxy: Malt: Wheat, Rye, Pilsener, Acidulated and Oat Malt. Yeast: Fork House Strain – Warm fermented: ABV: 4.5 IBU: 8. pH: 3.60

Te Aro Brewing Seven of Diamonds pale ale (4.3%) - A sessionable Pale Ale with a zesty lime and gooseberry aroma. Flavours of tropical tropical fruit have the sweetness balanced by the bitterness of all NZ hops; while the American Ale, Medium Crystal and Toffee Malt body shines through. Available now.

Horsebox Layer Cake Baltic Porter (8.3%) - Layer Cake is layered with subtle multiple flavours, you get all the smooth complex malt sweetness and roasted tones of a Baltic porter with a twist. This Chocolate Baltic has organic cocoa nibs added during fermentation giving it an additional velvety sweet layer. The Ruby red grapefruit coupled with the distinctive Mandarina Bavaria hops offers the unique icing on this cake and lends itself to a beautiful orange colour profile not normally found in a Porter. We've all seen white stouts, now its time to experience an Orange Baltic Porter

Horsebox Forkhill Red IPA (6.3%) - Bordering the route less traveled, a red with admirable body and strength. Not to be tested by the faint of heart, it is brave to the very end.

Sunshine Brewery Pattys Potation Imperial Stout (10%) -  a British-Style Imperial Stout made with UK Malt and Hops, aged in Chardonnay Barrels for 18 months, released for Saint Patrick's Day.

Events this week

Not so NRT: 2014 Vintage Rogue XS Imperial Stout - 5pm tomorrow, Hashigo Zake, 25 Taranaki St, Wellington. Join us this Tuesday for a Not So NRT keg of Rogue Ales & Spirits's XS Russian Imperial Stout - 2014 Vintage. The keg we have is nearly three years old, but (naturally) it’s been kept cold all that time, so we’re expecting that time will have done little to change the beer except, perhaps, help this its intense flavours meld just a little more.

16 Tun & Sawmill - Locally Sourced - 6.30pm Wednesday, 16 Tun, 20 Jellicoe St, Auckland. Come down to 16TUN and get a chance to try 5 The Sawmill Brewery beers, including seasonal brews, paired with locally sourced cheese and smoked meats from the Matakana region.

Garage Project and their plain and simple beers - 4pm Thursday, Lumsden Free House, 444 Khyber Pass, Auckland. 5 of Garage Project's standard low key simple beers. Nothing weird or wacky, definitely not any beer thats "sonically stimulated, energised and then soothed with a specially curated selection of classical music played directly into the beer using a submersible speaker' and no way we'd serve a beer that was "spiked with pineapple and sour cherry for an exotic explosion of citrus and tropical fruit aromas" and most certainly not anything along the lines of a " Rye bock conditioned on toasted coconut, pineapple and a touch of lime"

Matt Walsh from Modern Times - 6pm Friday, Regional Wines Beers Spirits, 15 Ellice St, Wellington. With an impressive track record that includes heading brewing at both Speakeasy Ales & Lagers and Karl Strauss Brewing, Matt Walsh has been heading up the brewing at Modern Times Lost Coast brewery for the last two years, ensuring their reputation for exciting and immaculately crafted brews. Matt will be tasting and talking us through a selection of his iconic beers, in a relaxed informal fashion

Moa, Cassels, Eagle, Raindogs, Renaissance, Two Thumb, Emerson's, Tuatara, Emporium, Volstead, Horse Box & Wigram.
