Events this week

New Release Tuesday - 5pm, Tuesday 20 September, Hashigo Zake, 25 Taranaki St Wellington. Wild & Woolly brewing Mother Superior Barrel Fermented Tripel. Just the one barrel of of Mother Superior was made, and we're tapping the last keg at 5pm Tuesday. Brewer Llew says: "Mother Superior is a huge barrel-fermented Belgian-style Tripel (indeed, at 11.5% it's too strong to be a tripel by most style guidelines.) Expect big yeast-derived aromas of bubblegum, white wine, pepper, and pineapple topped off with a bit of alcohol warmth."

Three Boys Brewers' Reserve Launch - 5.30 pm Wednesday 21 September. Whet Drinking Room, 151 Cambridge Tce Christchurch. Three Boys Coconut Milk Stout.

8 Wired Beer Degustation - 7.30pm Wednesday 21 September, 16 Tun, 20 Jellicoe St Auckland. 

McLeods Brewery Tasting & Meet the Brewer - 7pm Wednesday 21 September, Pomeroys, Kilmore St, Christchurch After leaving 8 Wired Jason Bathgate joined McLeods mid-April 2016. In that shorttime, Jason hasrevamped the core range, introduced new brews, and put in motiona barrel program to ensure a diverse range of styles for the future. No surprise given that Jason has worked for no less than two champion New Zealand breweries.

Beer & Cheese featuring McLeod's - 6pm 22 September, The Beer Library, 363 Colombo St, Christchurch. McLeod's head brewer Jason Bathgate will be in the shop featuring his beer and personal choices of cheese to pair. Jason has worked for two champion New Zealand breweries and he's passionate about making good beer whatever the style and has a keen interest in barrel-aged and sour beers. We will guide you through suggested pairings but experimentation and conversation will be encouraged.

Vultures Lane Third Birthday - 23-24 September, Vultures Lane, Vulcan Lane, Auckland. 

McPunk: McLeod's at Punky Brewster - 5pm Friday 23 September, Punky Brewsters Craft Beer Fillery, 22B Tyne St, Christchurch

Te Aro Imperial Stout Off - noon Saturday 24 September, Hashigo Zake, 25 Taranaki St, Wellington. Te Aro Brewing has a small but excellent barrel aging programme going on, and we've got its first bottled releases available now. This Saturday we'll be pouring the two big hitters from the initial release side by side: Pinot Noir Barrel Aged Chocolate Stout (12%) & Uncle Tom's Bourbon Barrel Stout (10.5%)

The Winners That Were - 27 September, Pomeroys, Kilmore St, Christchurch. In light of the NZ beer judging for the Brewers Guild of New Zealand 2016 awards we will be remembering the Winners That Were from Tuesday 27th of September onwards. We will be filling up to 12 taps of medal winning beers, the best in the land from last year.

Modern Times Tap Takeover - 30 September- 1 October, Lumsden Freehouse, 444 Khyber Pass Rd, Newmarket, Auckland. Join The Lumsden Freehouse and Beer Without Borders for some fresh off the boat Modern Times Beer on tap in Newmarket. Also appearing will be the classic version of Fortunate Islands, complete with its blastwave of tropical hop aromatics using Citra and Amarillo, and Blazing World, which with its Nelson Sauvin, Mosaic and Simcoe hops, is probably the fruitiest, dankest beer sweet, sweet money can buy.

Tiamana Grainfather Brew Day - 1pm 1 October, Craft Beer Depot, 70 Achilles Ave, Nelson. Come to Craft Beer Depot anytime between 1pm and close to meet this one woman brewing icon. She will be putting down a beer we should all learn to make or at least learn to drink in time for October.. hint hint. brewers can pick her brain about the many great ways that she incorporates Reinheitsgebot in her own - new world - way.

New releases

Tuatara/Hop Federation collaboration Crossing Swords Rich Brown Ale (5.5%) - Taste: Rich malt character with a good fruity hop flavour. Rich brown. Plum and raisin aroma from the dark malts; fruity hop aroma from Amarillo hops. Hops: Motueka, Amarillo. Malt: Pale. crystal, aurora. red back chocolate wheat. Bitterness: IBU/40

Sunshine Brewery Funked up Feijoa Gisborne Style Fruit Lambic (5%) - Kettle soured, loaded with Nelson Sauvin Hops then barrel aged with Feijoa for 12 months with the ‘Dirty Dozen’ Brett blend and a Farmhouse Strain of Yeast. Tart, acidic and refreshing!!
